SPN Ficlet: Can't (But I Can)
10th-Mar-2009 01:12 pm
Dean's dramatic entrance

Title: Can’t (But I Can)

Author: Nepenthe

Rating: PG

Word Count: 1,128

Beta’ed by:[info]rejeneration. This ficlet wouldn’t be half as good as it is without you! Thank you so much, Jen, for volunteering to help me. This story has gone a long way just because of you.

Summary: Just because you can’t hear, doesn’t mean you can’t. Sam has always been deaf and Dean has always been a little stupid.

Disclaimer: Don’t own, don’t sue.

Author’s Note:

I’m currently taking American Sign Language (ASL for short) and it’s changing my life. I was disappointed to not find a fic out there that dealt with Sam, specifically, of being deaf his whole life. I wanted to see big brother Dean not only taking care of Sam but also signing to his little brother. This might not be it exactly, but it’s a beginning. Please take note that I’m still learning ASL and I will make mistakes, but I will always try to be authentic as possible.

Final note: You might notice that Sam’s sentences at stilted. This is actually ASL. ASL doesn’t bother with those annoying connecting words, but only the words that will make sense. I wanted to show that. Dean’s sentences are complete, but that’s because he’s talking and signing. Is it too confusing? Do you guys like it?

They don’t talk much when they are in the car, mostly because Dean doesn’t like to sign, watch Sam sign, and drive all at the same moment. They spend the time in the car relaxing, before and after a case. Zen out or something. Sam spends most of his time staring through the window or sleeping. Not much to do otherwise, since reading in the car usually makes him nauseous.

To keep himself entertained, Dean listens to music and makes it as loud as he wants. They are inching along the interstate away from Los Angeles in bumper to bumper traffic. He glances over at his little brother watching the city thin and turns the music up until his ears start to hurt. Sam doesn’t even flinch and Dean looks back at the congested road, frowning.

He usually succeeds in not mourning the loss of Sam’s hearing, but there are moments. Moments when Dean wishes Sam could…just could. Music, for example. Music is definitely on Dean’s list of top ten favorite things. He can’t imagine what it would be like to never know Brian Johnson’s voice. To never know how music can creep into your soul. Dean enjoys a good rock out on the Impala’s wheel during such moments, but Sam always gets this confused expression on his face, like he can’t figure out if Dean is spastically signing something to him or having a seizure. If only Sam knew. There are so many things out there that Dean can never express with his hands.

Dean looks over at Sam again. His eyes are closed now, head leaned back, and body sprawled across the leather. His hand is pressed into the empty seat between them, fingers spread. It takes Dean a moment to realize that Sam is feeling for the vibrations of the music through the leather.

Dean smacks Sam in the shoulder and Sam peers at him through his lashes.

“Dude,” Dean says. He wishes there was a sign for dude. “What are you doing?”

Sam shakes his head and asks him to say again by tapping the tips of his fingers into his left palm.

Glancing back to check on the road (the Hybrid in front of them is not even moving), Dean points at Sam’s hand on the seat and then motions, What?

Sam smirks, slow and lazy. You listening AC/DC again. I know.

“How do you know?” Dean asks.

Sam pats the bench they share. Recognize. Can feel.

Dean looks ahead again, blowing out a gust of air. Sam can recognize AC/DC from their vibrations?

Sam hands gesture again and Dean shakes his head. “What? Didn’t see.”

I like music Boston better, he signs, hands like a whirlwind. Dean remembers how hard it was for Dad to understand Sam when he got excited. But to Dean? It was like having his brother paint a world with his hands. It’s like reading a book without the words. Sam’s hands become the story, become anything he wants, much like a person changing their voice to imitate someone else. Sam’s hands become the old lady down the street, the flirtatious waitress last week, or the ghost they salted and burned a few hours ago. They bend and twist and glide through the air, implanting images and emotions right into Dean’s heart and mind.

Boston good. Sam leans away from the seat, dramatizing now. Sam always was a big signer and he nudges Dean closer to the wheel so that his back is off the bench. He makes the sign for music quickly, a rocking hand motion over the crook of his arm, and then places his large hand at the small of Dean’s back. Sam’s fingers crawl up Dean’s spine slowly. A spider walk of pressure, Sam’s knuckles bending and straightening before coming to a rest between Dean’s shoulder blades. He shivers and hopes Sam doesn’t notice. Then Sam pushes Dean back again, his other hand resting on Dean’s chest, right over his heart, and Dean hopes it isn’t beating too fast. Sam’s pats his chest then draws away, wrist bending and swaying in imitation of music. Music goes up my back and through my chest, Sam is saying.

Sam laughs, a clipped gasp, like its being ripped out of his chest. It makes Dean grin and then frown.

“You mean the vibrations, right?” Dean asks.

Sam gives him a look and his ‘no’ is terse and hard.

“But you…” Dean flounders.

I feel music, Dean. He stabs his finger at Dean’s chest, stressing. You first hear, then you feel. But I first feel, then hear.

Dean swallows and tears his eyes to the backend of the car in front of them. They sit in silence (always silence for Sammy) while Dean thinks that through. Is this a new thing for Sam or has he always felt this way?

“You didn’t know?” Dean starts a little to hear Sam’s real voice. Sam hates using it, because he knows it didn’t sound right. Half the time Dean can’t understand what Sam is saying when he speaks. It’s easier for them to just sign to each other.

That doesn’t mean Dean hates hearing it. No. Sam makes beautiful noises when he signs, though some people wouldn’t agree. When he’s telling a story or when he doesn’t care about something, he smacks his lips more. When he’s nervous and trying to get what he wants to say out as quickly as possible, he makes breathy little ‘duh’ and ‘dah’ sounds, hands stuttering. When he’s angry (at Dean), his lips thin, his breathing labored, so noises come out through his lips like grunts and hisses, while his hands fly around harder, faster, and shorter. When he’s sad, you can hear the tears in the back of his throat, a sound mixed between a sob and whine. Sam’s voice is deep and heartfelt and real. When he tries to speak, it’s too careful and controlled, like he is trying to mold himself into a small box. Sam is too big for any box society could put him in. Sam’s voice is a stunning thing to hear, his voice, not the cautious one, even if it is garbled sometimes.

Dean shakes his head in the negative. There is a pause and then Sam lets out another laugh, loud and more honk-like, and Dean chuckles just because he is surprised by it. He looks at Sam’s cheerful, tanned face.

I deaf, but you dumb.

Dean reaches over and punches his brother in the arm and Sam punches back, smiling. They lapse into their respective corners, grinning at each other, until Sam gets a hopeful expression on his face. His strong hands lift into the air.

We listen Boston now? he signs and Dean laughs.

Wow. That was really, really amazing. I loved how you portrayed them, and how you so clearly transmitted how they signed and, god - Dean's descriptions of Sam's hands telling a story, and then Sam's voice, were totally, totally gorgeous. I'd love to read more in this 'verse, it's beautiful!
10th-Mar-2009 11:16 pm (UTC)
Thank you, thank you! Man, I'm super glad you liked it. I really can't wait to write more!

GOD DAMMIT LJ ATE MY COMMENT! It was a wonderful comment. :(

holy crap that was AMAZING. I teared up when you described the sounds Sam makes, laughed when he called Dean dumb, oh man, that was so so so good and I LOVED IT SO MUCH.
11th-Mar-2009 05:39 am (UTC)
Oh, baby! I'm so glad you liked it. Lots of this is thanks to Jen, though; You should see my first draft! lol. I have a few things sketched out more for this verse, but I'm drawing a blank on what to call it. Any ideas?
11th-Mar-2009 05:44 am (UTC)
I took some Auslan classes when I was at Uni and really wish I had kept it up. I find signing such a magical from of expression and I love the way you captured that in how Dean feels about listening to Sam's hands.

I really hope you continue this because I would love to read more.

Good luck with your classes.
11th-Mar-2009 06:02 am (UTC)
Thank you for reading! I really want to continue more; just as soon as I find the time!
11th-Mar-2009 05:49 am (UTC)
I'm taking ASL, too (which, seriously, you're so right. It changed my life like no other language has *shakes fist at 9 years of french*), and I just imagined cute lil Sammy signing all over the place and knocking shit over while he signs and scaring away birds and stuff. I love this idea. (Thought I kept running through my ASL syntax mode whenever Sammy was talking because finals are coming up, hehe)

Also, excuse me while I nerd out, but ASL is SOOOOO much a language for Sam. He's got an extremely expressive face which is so much a part of deaf culture, and he can absolutely talk to you with his eyes. I'm liking this idea more and more!
11th-Mar-2009 05:50 am (UTC)
OH MY GOD. IDEA FOR FICLET.

SAMMY HAS AN ADORABLE SECRET/GOOFY NAME SIGN FOR DEAN. THIS MUST HAPPEN.
11th-Mar-2009 05:56 am (UTC)
*snort* that's really wonderful characterization. true. my brother taught me asl a little way back. i've forgotten a lot, but i still know basically how to form a sentence, and i'm not completely hopeless when it comes to holding a conversation.

also, some of the best pop-n-lockers and breakdancers are deaf. totally to the vibrations. if i ever remembered, it's on youtube somewhere. deaf clubs. bassline so heavy it vibrates the air almost tangibly.

also, there's nothing quite like sitting in on a game of bunco with a group of deaf people. noisiest place i've ever been outside of an amusement park.
11th-Mar-2009 06:03 am (UTC)
I'm never heard of this game called Bunco! Would you mind enlightening me? :)
11th-Mar-2009 06:21 am (UTC)
just lovely, the descriptions of Sam's hands of Sam's voice was wonderful. I agree there should be more.
11th-Mar-2009 06:59 pm (UTC)
There will be! Thank you so much for reading. :)
11th-Mar-2009 08:52 am (UTC)
Ouch, this touched my heart in such a good way. *sniffle* wonderful.
11th-Mar-2009 06:59 pm (UTC)
I hope you will be back when I write more? I've got bits and pieces sketched out over their entire lives. Eventually, there might even be plot! lol. Thank you for reading!
11th-Mar-2009 10:08 am (UTC)
Oh, fabulous! This is just completely beautiful. I love it! And am eagerly awaiting more (and extremely excited to see it's heading Wincest-wards. *beams*)
11th-Mar-2009 07:03 pm (UTC)
It wouldn't been half as good if Jen hadn't helped me out. ;)

Yes, yes, I can't wait to get to the Wincest part too! I mean, we kind of tapped on it here but...haha. I just know that there's a lot to write before we get there!
11th-Mar-2009 12:26 pm (UTC)
This is absolutely adorable! It made me laugh and cry and just, wow.

Dean enjoys a good rock out on the Impala’s wheel during such moments, but Sam always gets this confused expression on his face, like he can’t figure out if Dean is spastically signing something to him or having a seizure. If only Sam knew. There are so many things out there that Dean can never express with his hands.

I love that. For some reason its a perfect characterization of Sam and Dean only with a twist.

I also love the way Dean thinks of Sam's signing and the noises and all of the emotions involved in that.

I just love this whole thing! I noticed in other comments that there might be more? I'd love to see more!!
11th-Mar-2009 07:09 pm (UTC)
There will be more! Every time I go to class, all I want to do it sit down and write more and more. ;) Thank you so much for reading!
11th-Mar-2009 01:31 pm (UTC)
I hope you don't mind. I friended you, cause I really hope you write more of this 'verse. LOVE it! :)
11th-Mar-2009 07:09 pm (UTC)
I ALWAYS love new friends! Friended you back! Thank you for reading!!
11th-Mar-2009 03:31 pm (UTC)
Wow. That was so beautiful. A little snapshot into their life. I loved the way Dean thought about Sam's voice and the way his hands moved when he signed. When he tries to speak, it’s too careful and controlled, like he is trying to mold himself into a small box. Sam is too big for any box society could put him in. *tears up*

But see, now you made me greedy! I would love to read more. *Sammy puppy eyes of Doom!* Pretty please?
11th-Mar-2009 08:32 pm (UTC)
The line you picked was from my original draft. :) I'm particularly happy with that line(s).

Of course there will be more! I love this 'verse so much and I'm very, very happy that people are interested in reading more! I'm all inspired for a couple of scenes I hadn't even thought of originally, just from everyone's comments.

Thank you so much for reading!
11th-Mar-2009 03:43 pm (UTC)
That really was beautiful. It's really, really well written. I love how you portray them, how they're still so close, how they're bonding over music, even though Sam can't actually hear. I started to tear up when Dean was describing Sam's hand movements and sounds. Awesome job!
11th-Mar-2009 08:34 pm (UTC)
I've probably said it about a million times, but alot of this is thanks to Jen. You should see the original draft! Your favorite parts are all because of her. I typed just a bit up, really bare bone stuff, and she said, "I WANT MORE HERE." She's a wonderful beta and great, great person.

Thank you so much for reading! I hope to see you back when I write more?
11th-Mar-2009 05:06 pm (UTC)
*loves this*

I took ASL in school and miss signing, every time I see a deaf!fic I get excited but hardly ever is it believable or true to deaf culture, I'm so glad I finally found a good one :D with someone who actually KNOWS what ASL and deaf culture is about

*silent applause*
11th-Mar-2009 08:37 pm (UTC)
SILENT APPLAUSE OH GOD. I love you so much right now. I think I just giggled.

Signing is amazing. I still am very nervous when I'm signing to the deaf, but they are always so happy to talk to people that it's okay when I mess up...alot. haha.

There are so many people out there that's taken ASL and I hope they keep coming back to this story. Mostly because I really want to be authentic as possible and they can always correct me! lol.

Thank you for reading! There will be more as time permits to write it up and I hope to see you again!
11th-Mar-2009 05:34 pm (UTC)
This was a lovely fic, really beautifully expressed.

I hope there will be more in this verse?
11th-Mar-2009 08:37 pm (UTC)
Yes, yes! I've already written up another part and I have bits and pieces scattered about to write up too. Just need to find the time to ignore my homework and write it up. ;) Thank you for reading!!
11th-Mar-2009 05:45 pm (UTC)
That's just lovely.
11th-Mar-2009 08:38 pm (UTC)
Thank you, darling! ;)
11th-Mar-2009 08:01 pm (UTC)
There are so very few stories about Sam being deaf in this fandom, and even fewer where ASL is properly used. I've seen one for Dean that does what you do here - portray ASL in the way that it should be. This is lovely. Hoping for more, soon! :)
11th-Mar-2009 08:39 pm (UTC)
I would LOVE to read that fic you just mentioned. For realz. I will try to put another piece out soon!...I'm pretty crazy about my beta'ing now and it usually goes through three drafts before I feel comfortable posting. :)
11th-Mar-2009 09:39 pm (UTC)
Ooh I really liked this. I like how you showed Sam's signing, it made sense.

Your descriptions are really good, I can see it happening really clearly in my head. :) I can't wait to see more from this verse!
12th-Mar-2009 12:17 am (UTC)
Thank you so much! I'm happy to know that people could easily see and understand Sam.
11th-Mar-2009 11:57 pm (UTC)
Lovely story! I'm so glad there'll be more!
12th-Mar-2009 12:18 am (UTC)
I'm working on it right now! ...Okay, actually, not right now, I'm really cooking, but sometime tonight! Yes!
12th-Mar-2009 03:59 am (UTC)
This is completely lovely! <333 Cannot wait for more!
12th-Mar-2009 08:09 am (UTC)
I've got a bit more written out...let's see where it goes! :) Thank you for reading!
12th-Mar-2009 04:37 am (UTC)
-kiss- I'm sorry, pumpkin! First chance to get here. =D You already know how much I love this and if I helped at all, I'm so glad. ♥

I'll be happy to look at the rest as it comes! You just let me know, okay?
12th-Mar-2009 08:12 am (UTC)
You helped SO MUCH. Truly, truly. I have a 500-word ficlet written up right now and I'm hesitate to go more with it and would love your opinion on it. You are amazing!
12th-Mar-2009 06:37 am (UTC)
what a beautiful piece!!!
I loved the way Dean noticed every little detail when Sam's expressing himelf.
It was really wonderful: the descriptions and the way Sam showed how he feels and hears the music.
I LOVE IT
12th-Mar-2009 08:14 am (UTC)
Thank you, thank you! I'm so glad you liked it!!
12th-Mar-2009 06:51 pm (UTC)
I would love to see more of this 'verse!

Incredibly evocative imagery.
12th-Mar-2009 10:45 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I've written another short piece and it should be posted sometime in the future.

14th-Mar-2009 01:35 am (UTC)
Thank you, thank you! I'm enjoying this verse way too much and there will be more soon. The next 'piece' was just finished today and it will be sent off the beta sometime this weekend after I do another look over tomorrow.
12th-Mar-2009 07:51 pm (UTC)
There are lots of reasons this is lovely, but my favorite is that it gives us boys who are tactile with each other. I see in your comments that you'll eventually be going wincest-wards, but even if you weren't, the way they use touch to supplement their communications is intimate and heartwarming.

I'm really looking forward to more of this!
14th-Mar-2009 01:37 am (UTC)
the way they use touch to supplement their communications is intimate and heartwarming.

That is such a beautiful thing to say! Man, I never thought of it that way, but you...man, I'm blown away. Thank you so much!
12th-Mar-2009 08:21 pm (UTC)
This is perfect, really. I've actually been waiting for someone to write something like this.

You definitely need to write more of this. Please please?
14th-Mar-2009 01:39 am (UTC)
Next piece was just finished today! I'm backtracking to when Sam is a teenager...I'm sure I'll be jumping around their whole lives with this 'verse. It should be posted in a week? Maybe more...Jen's an awesome beta and I want to put out the best work possible, so there are usually three drafts. And the next piece is longer too!

Thank you for reading!
